Lost Runner

April 6, 2011 by Gary "Story Hawk" Henry

This story was originally published in the June 2010 issue of Ultrarunning Magazine

Day two of the three-day race was done. A cloudy night engulfed northern Arkansas’ wild and mountainous Ozark National Forest as completely as if it lay 10 miles deep beneath a chilly lightless sea. Yet one runner still fought. Not the course or the trails; he’d lost those. Now, Mike DeMeritt, 48, West Chicago, battled on through the tomblike darkness and humid, low-40-degree temperatures without a light, warm clothes, or food, except for a water bottle and a few swigs of honey. It wasn’t just darkness …

Running Family

Dec. 13, 2010 by Olivine "Pixie Hawk" Holmes

Since it's the holiday season, I've been getting all soft and sappy feeling. So I thought I'd take advantage and write a bit about the importance and awesomeness of my vast running family. If I had to guess, I would say I'm friends with 100+ trail and ultra runners in the Kansas/Missouri area. And if you have any experience with the trail/ultra community you'll know that any of those people would probably donate an arm and part of a leg to help out a fellow runner.

I'm always amazed when I think about how very different many of my …

Sanders Saunter - Recap

Dec. 5, 2010 by Nick "Escher Hawk" Lang

I think I should start this report with the day before the race.

h2. FRIDAY

Friday was a fairly busy day at work. But it was also the day of a KU basketball game. Work was wanting me to stay at home and available incase we had any hiccups with the live game coverage that "KUsports.com":http://www2.kusports.com provides. Because the game was starting at 7pm I had to go mark the course earlier than I had originally planned.

I cruise on over to Prosoco Inc. headquaters to meet "Gary":http://www.ultrastory.com to get the pink tape …

Pi Day Preview Run

Dec. 4, 2010 by Gary "Story Hawk" Henry

Our upcoming Pi Day River Rotation Trail Run is going to be a huge success, if this morning's Pi Day Preview Run is any indicator. What a fun run!

Despite temps in the low 30s and blustery wind from the North, under sullen cloudy skies, nearly 20 Hawks and friends of Hawks showed up to see what Race Director Laurie "Pixie Hawk" Euler has in mind for her math-minded March half-marathon, set for the first Saturday following Pi Day. Pi Day is March 14 -- the race is set for March 19.

The Greek letter Pi is the …

Politics

Nov. 24, 2010 by Gary "Story Hawk" Henry

Sad that we have to have politics in running -- something that's all about friends and freedom, isn't it?

So for the record, in writing, here are the politics of the Lawrence Trail Hawks.
