I wanted to alert everyone to the inaugural TJ5K Trail Race on 11/16/13. This event is a benefit for [Tiny-K] (http://www.tinyk.org/aboutus.html), which works with special-needs children in Douglas county. The course is flat and fast, so it might be a good place to go for your PR!

9 Miles at Night is a distinctive and fun race for both serious runners and families desiring a unique adventure. It takes place along the Kansas River Trail, a very scenic and mostly smooth off-road trail loop through the woods, bordered by the Kansas River on one side and the levee on the other. The out and back sections of the trail are often close to one another. It is the perfect night adventure run and provides only a minor technical challenge and a little climbing. The well-worn trail is a long and skinny loop with mostly a sandy tread. …

Justin D. gave the Treasurer’s Report. He have a current balance of $7,068.01. Public storage is now $71.00 a month. Justin renewed our non-profit status ($40/month) with the state of Kansas. We paid for half the honorarium fee (with Run Lawrence) for Jennifer Pharr-Davis’ upcoming speaker event. We discussed inviting her to attend our pre-race meal for the Hawk event.

Hi All!

The fabled Lunar Trek night run in Scandia, Kansas is scheduled for Friday night July 19. Lots of distances -- 10k through 100K at night under the full or nearly full moon.

And as always, we'll have our own Lunar Prep run to get ready for Lunar Trek.

Lunar Prep will take place at 9 p.m., Saturday, July 6. We'll run the Levee by the Kansas River, and some of the hilly dirt roads beyond, because it's very similar to the Lunar Trek course.

As I’m sure you know, we had to reschedule the 5th Annual Shoreline Shuffle 5K Trail Run from May 4 to Sunday, Sept. 29. We did this at the request of the Kansas Trails Council (of which I am a member), because of poor trail conditions. We feared that parts of the course could be damaged by heavy traffic, following that week’s severe storms.

Possible reschedule dates in May and June were too filled with conflicts. Heat, humidity, ticks and poison ivy made us think twice about later in the summer. In the end, we chose the last weekend …

Sara Kay Carrell contacted me about letting everyone know about the Hell Creek races that are going on this year. The Hell Creek races are at the Wilson Lake State Park on the Switchgrass Trails.

Caroline briefly discussed how the Pi Day race turned out. The next Pi Day race will be set for 3/16/2013. She will need some distilled water gallon jugs to help hold down the tents.

Karen discussed the Shoreline Shuffle 5k trail race at Clinton Lake State Park, which is set for 5/4/2013. Karen stated this is her last year to be the Race Director since she will be moving later this year. She will put out an announcement on the list …

Art King from the Lawrence Mountain Bike club is hosting a trail maintenance day this Saturday from 9am to noon. here's more from Art:

Well it looks like the big thaw is here. ...and the River Trail needs a lot of work.

We will be working on getting things cleaned up next Saturday. The trail is littered with branches and dead fall. The corridor needs to be cleared. I know we have at least one large tree down. We also have work to do on the tread. It would great to have a big turnout this time.

Caroline, our Pi Day Race Director, stated that the Pi Day race is scheduled for Sunday, March 10, 2013. The Pi Miler is 3.14 miles and begins at 8 a.m. Awards will be given at 8:45 a.m. The Half Marathon begins at 9 a.m. The packet pickup will be on Saturday, March 9th, the day before the race from 12-6 p.m. at Garry Gribbles in Lawrence.

State of the Lawrence Trail Hawks Justin H. called the meeting to order and summarized several of our members accomplishments and our weekly runs and activities. We have 2 new runs: the 8 a.m. Sunday morning campus hill run led by Sarah Henning, and the 2 p.m. Sunday River Trail run led by Beth Morford. We currently have 105 active paid members.
